INTERVIEW: Maxsta Talks New Single 'I Wanna Rock,' Dating Emma Watson & More!

PRPR

After years of underground domination 20-year-old UK MC Maxsta is looking to blast into the charts with new single I Wanna Rock out this week.

TaleTela got the opportunity to speak to the rapper about working with Rizzle Kicks, preferring comparisons to Dizzee Rascal rather than Chipmunk and courting Ms. Emma Watson

Tell us a bit about the single I Wanna Rock...

I Wanna Rock is basically an energetic tune, its hip-hop but its got Grime elements to it. Flow-wise its just me trying to play about with it, Im trying to capture the listeners. Overall I wouldnt say that it is a party tune but you can party to it though.

On the remix to I Wanna Rock you have Lady Leshurr, Rizzle Kicks and Tinchy Stryder what a combination

Yeah because apart from Tinchy, Im already on tracks with those other artists. Leshurr and I recorded something I dont really know what is going on with it. Im also on a track with the Rizzle Kicks, which might go on an album at some point Im not sure. Tinchy I haven't collaborated with but hes my mate so he just got on it.

What was it like behind the scenes joining forces with those guys?

I write quite fast I just work quite fast and so I need people in the studio to be at that same level. With Leshurr she went in and she was on point and the Rizzle Ricks they are like me and are energetic in the studio. Its all fun but at the same time the objective is to get the tune done.

Many people are going to think that youre this new artist when youve actually been doing this for a while so tell us a bit about how you got started

Well Ive always done music, before rap I played a load of differ! ent inst ruments. I used to play the cello, I used to play the drums and the guitar. But when I put them down and picked up the pen I didnt really care about instruments anymore and started writing lyrics when I was 10/11 years old. I started going to the local youth clubs and spitting when I was 12/13 and people liked what I was doing.

I then got introduced to someone who had a studio and we started making tunes and Id pass them around in school and everybody liked them. I never did all this to be famous, I just did it for fun but when I started to get radio play from underground people like Logan Suma and other people in the grime scene I thought that I could start to take it seriously.

What kind of stuff are you listening to at the moment, what is on your iPod?

A lot of stuff at the moment. Ive got some A$AP Rocky, some Jay Z, obviously weve got some Rizzle Kicks on there because I like their stuff. Ive got some Sum 41, Nirvana, some Red Hot Chili Peppers. What else? Inner CityOwl Cityloads of different things man.

Lots of people on Twitter are saying that youre one of their 20 People Theyd Most Like To Meet who are some of yours?

Steve Jobs, Biggie, Dr. Dre, David Beckham and Emma Watson, bruv

I hear you have a big crush on her. Do you think shed go for an MC?

I dont know but Im just trying to get my cake up to that level one-day and Ill be like Yo, holla at me

OK so just in case she reads this, where would you take her on a date and what would you do? Shes very classy yknow

Id try and keep it pretty normal, Id just be like Come lets go watch a show. All that wining and dining stuff will come when Ive got a bit of security in the situation, like when I know that a man might just be getting in there but for the first date Im not going to bust a move Id just be trying to check her vibe.

Is there any aspect of going mainstream after waiting so long that you fear?

Nah, m an I know that people expect me to pretty my tracks upobviously I am on this commercial scale and Im trying to make music for a commercial audience but I am not trying to make commercial music if that make sense.

So if people call you the new Chipmunk, does that put a smile on your face?

No. I'd much rather be compared to Dizzee Rascal. Some people actually compare me to him, and Id prefer the comparison to Dizzee. I mean Chipmunks first album sold if not as much then more than Boy In Da Corner but the critical acclaim and the Mercury Award, and representing youth culture in Britain thats what Im after.

Dizzee recently performed in front of a billion people at the Olympics and thats a pretty big deal in terms of the Grime genre. Does it make you think about how far the genre as come and I assume thats where you wanna end up?

As much as Ill never detach myself from Grime Ill probably be doing a grime mixtape in a bit and just a couple of tunes for Logan, for iTunes and for the core fan base just because its not my intention to leave anything Ive done before behind but at the same time I am not some Grime martyr.

Everything that happens for grime is good but when Maxsta makes Grime, its just Maxsta doing what he likes to do. I dont really care about the scene in terms of me working with another MC, I just do Maxsta completely and if I could contribute to Grime being taken in by a wider audience then I would feel good about that but I am pushing Maxsta not grime. Im a fan of Grime, but I have my own path to create.
