Emma Watson Steals a New Role in The Bling Ring, Directed by Sofia Coppola
A new Sofia Coppola film is always a cause for celebration, but were especially excited about her next project. Not only has the director cast our very own English rose Emma Watson in the film but she has based it on one of the most bizarre celebrity news stories of the past few years.
The film The Bling Ring takes its name from a group of fame-obsessed teenage burglars who broke into celebrities homes in Los Angeles in 2008 and 2009. Over the course of a year, the teenagers stole $3million in cash and belongings from stars in including Paris Hilton, Lindsay Lohan and Megan Fox. Paris bore the brunt of their crime spree with a $2million jewellery heist. Vanity Fair called the crimes completely unprecedented in the history of Hollywood.
Its not clear exactly what role Emma will play yet but our money is on either burglar Alexis Neiers who starred in the pilot of a reality TV show for E! before turning to crime or ringleader Rachel Lee, who was eventually jailed for four years.
Since filming the last Harry Potter movie, Emma Watson has appeared in My Week With Marilyn and will star in indie-drama The Perks of Being A Wallflower later this year. She is also set to appear in an adaptation of writer Emma Forrests memoir, Your Voice Inside My Head.
Sofia is said to want The Bling Ring to reflect todays culture of celebrity. According to the producers who include her brother Roman Coppola it will reveal a sobering view of our modern culture. Serious stuff but were sure Sofia will do it in style.
