Screening Room: Emma Watson and Kristen Stewart Break Type-Casting, Land New Roles
Trailer of the WeekThe Dark Knight Rises
Allow this new trailer for The Dark Knight Rises to slake your thirst until July 20th when the film opens worldwide. Trailer #3 gives us a glimpse of some key plot elements. For one, Bane (Tom Hardy) discovers Batman's true identity as a clip shows him talking to an unmasked Bruce Wayne (Christian Bale). More than that, Bane will gain the upper hand on The Dark Knight as we see a battered Wayne ask him, "Why didn't you just kill me?" To which Bane replies, "Your punishment must be more severe." The film will be the most ominous of the trilogy, but the title seems to promise the hero will emerge victorious in the end (something in question if you've read Knightfall). Whatever the outcome, writer/director Christopher Nolan has reinvented The Caped Crusader and created a franchise that now stands as the model for all future adaptations.
On Set Photo of the WeekKidman plays it downNicole Kidman was snapped on the set of her new film, The Railway Man, co-starring Colin Firth. The Australian actress looked fully in character in her green tweed coat and stockings.
- A few weeks back we reported on Seth Rogan and Evan Goldberg's directorial debut, The Apocalypse. The new comedy stars Rogen and a ton of his buddies: Jonah Hill, James Franco, Aziz Ansari, Jason Segel among others, all playing themselves, at a party when the apocalypse hits and bedlam ensues. The cast was already looking pretty great but was missing a crucial element: a female. Enter Emma Watson, the first big-name actress to join the production. Variety has the details of her inclusion, as well as of talk Rihanna is being courted to come aboard. Watson is a very interesting choice as she has yet to delve into comedy, nevermind the kind of off-brand humor Rogen et al. are known for. It should be fun to see wh! at she's made of.
- Kristen Stewart has a new project planned. Titled Cali, the film will be a return to an independent set for the Snow White and the Huntsman star. Cali follows Mya (Stewart), who, along with her boyfriend, sell a phony snuff film (featuring Mya) and then blow all the cash. In time, Mya will have to "rise from the grave" to save her little sister, who she left behind. The film seems like a gritty and somewhat controversial choice for the young actress, although she has not shied away from dark roles. (She played a teenage prostitute in Welcome to the Rileys). There's no word yet on who will play Mya's boyfriend in the film.
Iron Man himself, Robert Downey, Jr. posed with Robert De Niro at The Avengers premiere during the Tribeca Film Festival in New York City. The superhero extravaganza is set to break box office records when it opens everywhere this weekend.
Early reviews are nearly all positive for Joss Whedon's crossover Marvel blockbuster, The Avengers. Whedon finds new ways to spin some unavoidably old ideas and has made a truly great action film. Does the film merit any Oscar consideration? Well, it certainly deserves technical nominations. The film seems a shoo-in for Best Sound Editing and Mixing, as well as Best Visual Effects. It takes a little while to get going, but the final battle, which takes place in New York City, is one for the ages and a spectacular cinematic achievement.
I can't say The Avengers deserves Best Picture consideration, but it's easily one of the best Marvel Comics movies ever made. Working against its candidacy is the looming arrival of another comic book adaptation, The Dark Knight Rises, in July. The Avengers should enjoy the attention it's getting now because Christopher Nolan and Christian Bale will own the summer months.
